Project: Carol Highsmith’s America Website

Carol Highsmith is a photographer best known for her decades-long documentation of American landscapes and culture, and her ongoing donation of that work to the Library of Congress. The goal was simple: build a site that got out of the way and let the photography speak.

The design centers on full-screen cinemagraphs and curated photography from Carol’s vast collection, paired with quotes and supporting content that gives visitors a sense of Carol’s life and personality. The result is a site as distinctive as its subject — recognized with a W3 Award Best in Show, two Golds, and a Silver.
